Welcome to our Blog


Hello my name is Lauren, my husband Andrew and I are keen Naturalist. We said why not put a blog together on all social media platforms to educate everyone from young children to older children (older adults) about the sea and the lovely wildlife that we have available in the world.

We will be taking you all on a journey with us as we take photos and talk about the different creatures that we find in the sea and above the sea.

I hope you enjoy our adventures as much as we enjoy going on them.

The Creatures

 After the aquarium was setup for a few days and cycled. Went to the local beach to find the first sea life to make the aquarium home. A female shore crab we named Simone Also added Sea weed and live rock to quicker establish a natural environment and empty shells found on the beach. To make the ecosystem sustainable we have selected animals that can live together and co-exist. As often with smaller animals in nature they become food for the bigger ones. One week later more creatures were added Two anemones A dahlia anemone was also paced in the bottom right hand corner And a Snake lock anemone With the sea weed came a few other shell fish such as: Common Limpet Common Winkle Flat winkle Flat Top shell Grey Top shell Also panted some sea grass found loose on the shore line Breadcrumb sponge On the rocks came also water squirts, keel worms, coiled tube worms many other smaller species. Setting up the Aquarium

Setting up the aquarium does take a little while, about a week to establish. For the bottom sediment we chose fine sand 85 % and crushed coral sand 15%, working as the PH buffer as the sea has a high PH level of 8+.   Below is the sand and salt we used.   We used 45kg of sand and 15kg of sea salt. The saltiness of the water is measured in salnity. Which is around 1.025 to check this we use a salnity tester. Photo Below. Due to the aquariums position in our basement to check the temperature, we have a battery thermometer. The temperature in the aquarium is a stable 21oC. For lighting we choose LED 24 watt lighting which is set up on a 24 hr day and night cycle to mimic the outside.   For filtration we have purchased the FX6 external canister filter that runs up to 1,500 litres. Which was the most expensive purchase for the aquarium.
